Landmark Workshop Explores Path to Reforming Hate Speech Laws in Sri Lanka

A groundbreaking workshop titled “A Path to Reform: Assessing Hate Speech Laws in Sri Lanka” was held at the Mandarina Hotel, Colombo, bringing together prominent legal experts, academics, and stakeholders. This significant event was organized under the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC-UNESCO), in collaboration with the Media Law Forum, aiming to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration on hate speech policy reform.

The Guest of Honour, Hezekiel Dlamini, Advisor for Communication & Information at UNESCO’s New Delhi Regional Office, delivered an impactful keynote speech. He conducted an in-depth review of the proposed hate speech policy reform document, sharing global experiences and emphasizing UNESCO’s initiatives in combating hate speech through effective media policies.

Dr. Thusitha Abeysekara, Senior Lecturer in Law and Head of the Legal Studies Unit at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, presented a compelling analysis of comparative hate speech legislation. His presentation highlighted both the challenges and opportunities of adopting international best practices to strengthen Sri Lanka’s legal framework.

The workshop also featured a vibrant discussion forum, moderated by AAL Viranjana Herath, Chairperson of the Media Law Forum. Participants from diverse professional backgrounds engaged in an interactive exchange of ideas, offering constructive feedback and valuable insights on the proposed policy reform document, fostering a collaborative approach to addressing this pressing issue.
