The Sri Palee Campus of the University of Colombo Hosts Media Law Awareness Program 

On October 11, 2024, the Media Law Forum conducted an in-depth awareness program at the Sri Palee Campus of the University of Colombo, specifically designed for students from the Mass Media Department. The event offered participants a comprehensive understanding of Sri Lanka’s media laws, providing valuable insights into the country’s evolving regulatory frameworks.

The program opened with a discussion on key media laws in Sri Lanka, covering both foundational legal principles and recent developments. Special attention was given to how digital transformation has reshaped the regulatory landscape, presenting both new challenges and opportunities for media professionals.

A key session was dedicated to the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), emphasizing its significance in media and journalism. Students were provided with a detailed understanding of data protection and the impact of the PDPA on media practices in Sri Lanka.

In addition to legal frameworks, the program explored ethical considerations and professional standards in journalism. Topics included the role of ethics in media, the ethical challenges faced by modern journalists, and the importance of adhering to professional codes of conduct.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, giving students the opportunity to engage with experts and deepen their understanding of media law and ethics. The program aimed to prepare the next generation of media professionals to navigate Sri Lanka’s dynamic media landscape with integrity and professionalism.
