Workshop on Civil Defamation Law for Journalists at Lakehouse

Media Law Forum conducted a specialized workshop at the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited aimed at educating journalists on civil defamation law on 3rd of November 2024. Led by Mr. Viranjana Herath, President of the Media Law Forum, the program provided journalists with a comprehensive understanding of civil defamation law and its implications for media practice. The session covered key aspects of defamation, including legal definitions, case law, and the distinction between civil and criminal defamation in Sri Lanka. Mr. Herath guided participants through practical examples, discussing responsible reporting, ethical considerations, and how to navigate legal challenges while upholding press freedom. The workshop also offered a platform for journalists to discuss their experiences and questions regarding defamation, encouraging a proactive approach to accurate and fair reporting. Attendees left with enhanced knowledge of legal standards, better equipping them to handle potential defamation issues in their work.
